Founded as BSW Limited in 1983, the company created the world’s first subsea ball and taper lifting device which was subsequently patented. BSW then became incorporated in 1994 and then acquired by the First Tech Group in 2004. As part of the First Tech Group, BSW was rebranded as First Subsea in 2009.

First Subsea’s patented Ballgrab® ball and taper connector technology is used for deepwater moorings, ROVless / diverless bend stiffener connectors for production risers and umbilical’s, pipeline recovery and repair tools, buoy pull-in tools and drill pipe handling. Ballgrab® connectors have a proven history with over 700 systems deployed into a multitude of markets.

Recently the connector technology has been applied to the development of quick release systems for arctic moorings, and the offshore renewables markets. The company has also entered the drilling equipment market with the development of ball and taper pipe casing handling and floor slip tools.

In 2013, First Subsea achieved ABS 2009 Approval for its mooring connectors, the culmination of many years of financial investment and time and effort by our dedicated team of engineers.
